Paulson Molder 1
First day - a.m. Molding economics - the effects of startup time, cycle time, downtime, rejects and loss of plastic on profit.

Composition and types of plastics -
what are plastics?
• Polymer molecule size and shape
• How and why the plastic raw material can change - lot to lot variation, regrind, additives in plastic
• Protecting the plastic raw material from harm - overheating, contamination, moisture
• Types of molecular structures inside molded parts and the effects-amorphous, crystalline, oriented
• Plastic flow in molds – Fountain flow, viscosity, viscosity change, flow-profiles
• The effects of plastic pressure , plastic temperature and cooling on the molded parts
First day - p.m. The molding machines -hydraulic and electric
• The major systems – heating , injection, clamp, ejection
• Components – screw, heating barrel, hopper and throat, nozzle, clamp
• The machine controls - pressure, temperature, timers, pvt.
• Optimum control settings
Second day - a.m. The injection molds and molding
• The molding sequence
• Types and parts of molds
• Runners, gates and cavities
• Cavity layouts, balance venting and cooling
• Part ejection methods
Second day - p.m. Molding from the plastics point of view –The four primary variables in the injection molding process
• How temperature, flow, pressure, and cooling determines the properties of the molded parts
• This three-step relationship- machine controls – plastic conditions – molded part properties
• Effects of each machine control on the machine and on the plastic
• The structure of the molded parts - causes of defects, how and why molded part properties vary
Third day - a.m. • The distribution of crystallinity, molecular orientation and stress inside the molded parts and its effects
• Examples and discussion of molded part defects, their causes and solutions (attendees can bring their own parts with defects for discussion and solution)

Molding using SimTech, injection molding simulator

Setting and effects of the machine controls Gate sealing determination Understanding pressure recordings

Actual molding machine demonstration

On the afternoon of the second day attendees will visit a molding facility for further training
Third day - p.m. Review of the material

Knowledge test
At the end of the course a test of 50 questions is given.

Grading
This test is scored by Paulson and certificates are sent to each plant for distribution. Grades over 85% receive gold certificates of achievement, 75% to 85% silver certificates of achievement, all others receive a certificates of completion.
